FRANKENSTEIN Stars in final issue MEN OF WAR!

At the helm of the final issue of MEN OF WAR are white hot writers Jeff Lemire (Animal Man, Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E., Sweet Tooth) and Matt Kindt (Revolver) with art by Tom Derenick.

In this action packed issue, Frankenstein walks through a rain of bombs over 1941 London before being dragged to the depths of the Pacific Ocean and onto the shores of Japan. Will he make it there in one piece so he can team up with GI Robot to defeat the Axis weapon that threatens to turn the tide of the war? Frank’s success will hinge on the help of a four-armed super-spy assassin working in the shadows.

We asked Jeff and Matt about working on this issue and here’s what they had to say:

“I first met Matt Kindt at the MoCCA festival in New York in 2005. He was selling copies of Super Spy and I was selling my first graphic novel, Lost Dogs. We hit it off right away and since then Matt has become one of my closest friends.

Coincidentally, Bob Harras told me I was going to be writing the Frankenstein: Agent of SHADE series, for the New 52, at last year’s Emerald City Con in Seattle. I was sharing a hotel room with Matt that weekend and we spent the rest of the show talking about ideas for the book. Before long it turned into a full-on brainstorming session with Matt and a lot of the ideas from that weekend went into the first 5 or 6 issues of Frank. So Matt has been a secret contributor to the series since it launched in September.

So, when Joey Cavalieri asked me to write this special “Frankenstein in World War II” issue of Men of War, I immediately asked if Matt could co-write it with me. It was an incredibly fun experience. We just kept trying to top each other in terms of the crazy Ideas we could squeeze into the book, and I think fans are going to have as much fun reading it as we had writing it!” – Jeff Lemire

“It was fitting that Jeff and I worked on Frankenstein’s secret World War II history together. We both dug up the craziest ideas we could think of — literally I think we tried to top each other with some outrageous imagery and story ideas. We stitched it all together and then Tom applied the electricity (art) to bring this monster to life. Tom seriously drew what is my favorite double-page spread of all time in this issue. You’ll know it when you see it. I have to say working with Jeff on this has easily been the most fun I’ve had doing comics so far…and I’ve had a lot of fun. And like all unholy unions I think the sum is even crazier than the parts!” – Matt Kindt

And SWEET TOOTH #26 is also out today. It's a great jumping on point to the series, with a brand new storyline starting up called "THE TAXIDERMIST" and features stunning, fully painted artwork by my guest artist extraordinaire, MATT KINDT!

Matt is an incredible cartoonist in his own right. His most recent books include the stunning REVOLVER from Vertigo, 3 STORY:The Secret Life of THE GIANT MAN from Dark Horse and SUPERSPY from Top Shelf. We met at MOCCA about six or seven years ago and hit it off right away. Matt has since become one of my closest friends and agreed to to take on the art chores for this special 3-issue story in Sweet Tooth so that I could finally finish my UNDERWATER WELDER graphic novel for Top Shelf.

The story itself flashes back to 1911 in Alaska and features a whole new cast of characters that, at first glance, seem completely unrelated to out regular cast of Gus, Jepperd etc. But as the tale unfolds we start to see surprising connections and eventually the origin of The Plague will be revealed in Issue 28!

Matt knocked it out of the park, and I think this is some of his absolute finest artwork. I'm really excited about the story and couldn't be happier to finally collaborate with Matt!

DC Comics launched the first of its 52 new #1 issues last night with the new JUSTICE LEAGUE #1. Next Wednesday, the rest of the "New 52" will start, and ANIMAL MAN #1 will be part of the first wave, followed by FRANKENSTEIN #1 the following week.

Had a great time at San Diego Comicon this year, thanks to all the readers who stopped by to visit. Here's a couple of pics snapped by my Sweet Tooth editor Mark Doyle. The first is Sweet Tooth colorist JOSE VILLARUBIA and I signing at the DC Booth the second is myself with American Vampire's Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque on the VERTIGO panel.

If you missed it there were a few announcements regarding my books.

First, my good friend, the amazing MATT KINDT will be illustrating issues 26-28 of Sweet Tooth while I finish drawing my next OGN THE UNDERWATER WELDER. And furthermore we've decided to expand the Sweet Tooth universe by having guest artists do stand alone stories between all my major arcs. Expect to see NATE POWELL and EMI LENOX return as well as others!

And also we announced that AMERICAN VAMPIRE artist RAFAEL ALBUQUERQUE will be drawing an issue of Sweet Tooth sometime next year and in that same month I will be drawing an issue of AMERICAN VAMPIRE!

In September, the 25th issue of Sweet Tooth will hit comic shops. It's hard to believe that my little antlered-epic has survived in such a harsh marketplace, let alone thrived the way it has.

So a big THANK YOU to all Sweet Tooth readers. I have some really special things planned for the book as we enter the third year, first off, Issue 24 and 25 will feature my first ever fully painted interior artwork! Years of sitting next to the uber-talented Matt Kindt and watching him paint amazing watercolored commissions for fans finally inspired me to get back to painting myself. Here's a sneak peek at a few painted pages from #24.

New Animal Man and Frankenstein #1's Coming in September!

A new Swamp Thing, a new Frankenstein, and more: DC Comics will roll out more new #1s:

DC Comics continues to roll out announcements of new first-issuesfeaturing famous characters and creators in striking combinations. This morning we start off with two highly intriguing combos: Scott Snyder, who’s been doing such strong work on American Vampire, will write a new version of Swamp Thing, and Jeff Lemire, author of one of comics’ finest current books, Sweet Tooth, is taking on Animal Man. Since re-workings of Swamp Thing and Animal Man are so closely associated with other, earlier writers (Alan Moore and Grant Morrison, respectively), these re-re-imaginings are bound to be both fascinating and, perhaps inevitably, subjects of debate.

Other new supernatural/fantasy/horror-themed books that will be announced by DC Comics today and scheduled to publish in September include:

• Justice League Dark, what DC terms “a band of supernatural heroes” — John Constantine, Deadman, Shade the Changing Man and Madame Xanadu (wouldn’t it be cool if they really were supposed to be a band?) – written by Peter Milligan.

• Demon Knights, super-heroism set in medieval times, a premise that would have me yawning except that it’s being written by Paul Cornell, who did such a terrific job recently onKnight and Squire, and on Lex Luthor in Action Comics.

• Frankenstein, Agent of SHADE, which may be the most below-the-radar promising of all. The writer is again Jeff Lemire, taking the Frankenstein monster and turning him/it into an action hero alongside other fictional monsters in the service of a government organization: The Super Human Advanced Defense Executive. This giddy mish-mash has the potential for either delicious cleverness or disastrous offal. Either way, I’m in for issue #1.

DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio told me these new titles are intended to “shake up the status quo” and to take the company and its creators “out of their comfort zone,” to inspire “new, fresh” creativity.

ESSEX COUNTY TO BE ADAPTED TO FILM

Visual effects supervisor John Dykstra has set up his first feature film directing gig called Super Zero, which is an adaptation of the comic book Essex Country: Tales from the Farm. Dykstra most recently worked on the film X-Men: First Class, which was a pretty incredible movie for those of you who haven't seen it yet.

Tales of the Farm was created by Jeff Lemire, and was adapted into screenplay form by John Carr. The film will be shot live action, but will include heavy special effects sequences. The story is described as being edgy, but family-friendly. The story follows an orphaned 10-year-old who goes to live on a farm with his uncle. As their relationship grows strained, he befriends the town's gas station owner, a former pro hockey player, and the pair escape into a private fantasy world of superheroes and alien invaders.

The comic book has won several awards and according to Variety "the producers' plan is to "make a big splash at ComicCon, where Lemire and the publisher, Top Shelf Productions, will make an appearance." Producers will be making a very hard push over the next few weeks, which will include casting announcements as well as financing and distribution commitments. After that a package will be sent out to the studios.

Dykstra also worked on the original Star Wars film, Spider-Man 2, and was a producer on the original 1978 Battlestar Galatica series. Here's what he had to say in a statement,

I've been so involved in films that are primarily based on the action sequences and over-the-top visuals that this to me was incredibly attractive just based on the depth of the characters and the evocative nature of the story.

This sounds like it could to out to be a very fun sci-fi movie. Here's a description of the story from the comic book:

Xeric-Award-winning cartoonist Jeff Lemire (Lost Dogs) illustrates the tale of Lester, an orphaned 10-year-old who goes to live on his Uncle's farm. Their relationship grows increasingly strained and Lester befriends the town's gas station owner, and damaged former hockey star Jimmy Lebeuf. The two escape into a private fantasy world of super-heroes, alien invaders and good old-fashioned pond Hockey. Tales from the Farm is the first volume in a trilogy of graphic novels set in a fictionalized version of Lemire's hometown of Essex County, Ontario.

ULTRA THE MULTI-ALIEN Out Today!

Today the STRANGE ADVENTURES Anthology from Vertigo hits stores and in addition to great stories by the likes of Brian Azzarello, Eduardo Risso, Pete Milligan and others it features an 8-page Sci-Fi story by me.

As a challenge from editor Mark Doyle I did a story about one of, if not the strangest characters in DC Comic' history, ULTRA THE MULTI-ALIEN (His original appearance from Mystery In Space #103 featured above). I'm really proud of how the comic came out, it may be my best short story and features great colors by my Sweet Tooth collaborator Jose Villarubia and awesome old-school lettering by Superboy's letterer John J. Hill.

I will be selling a limited edition, 28- page Sketchbook collecting 2 rare short comics, commissions and sketchbook material from the last couple of years. ON CANADA READS...

Well, I was the first book voted off of the Canada Reads competition today, and I'll admit that it stings a bit more than I thought it would. But, in the end I am really proud of the accomplishment of making it to the final 5. It's a great sign for the future of graphic novels in this country, and their continued acceptance mainstream literary circles on a whole.

The truth is Essex County would never have been nominated if not for all the brilliant Canadian cartoonists who laid the ground work for such recognition over the last couple of decades. Dave Sim, Seth, Chester Brown, Julie Doucet and so many others not only inspired me, but a whole generation of cartoonist that will continue to push our beloved medium into the spotlight.

I'm proud to be part of such a great tradition of Canadian cartoonists, and continue to be inspired by the likes of Darwyn Cooke, Mariko and Jillian Tamaki, Kate Beaton and so many other great talents.

And, a big thanks to Sara Quin for her impassioned defense and promotion of not only EC but graphic novels in general. I know a lot of people have read EC, and other graphic novels, over the last couple of months who otherwise never would have.

And thanks to Chris, Brett and Leigh at Top Shelf for helping me run with the ball once I got it, you guys are the best!

Joe Shuster Nominations Announced!

The finalists for the 2011 Joe Shuster Awards, which recognize the best in Canadian comics, have been announced.

The list is (very) long, so click here to see a list of all the nominees.

Jeff Lemire is up for three awards (Outstanding Comic Book Cartoonist, Outstanding Comic Book Cover Artist, Outstanding Comic Book Writer) while other nominees include Scott Chantler (Comics for Kids, Outstanding Comic Book Cartoonist), Bryan Lee O’Malley (Outstanding Comic Book Cartoonist) and Kate Beaton (Outstanding Web Comics Creator).

Chester Brown and Todd McFarlane will also be inducted into the Canadian Comic Book Creator Hall of Fame.

The winners will be announced June 18, 2011, in Calgary.

The Joe Shuster Awards were established in 2004; they are named after Joe Shuster (duh!), the Toronto-born co-creator of Superman.

Superboy #2 (Published by DC Comics; Review by Teresa Jusino): I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: superhero titles that prominently feature teenagers are superhero titles at their best. The issues of identity and responsibility that come up in superhero comics are perfect metaphors for fumbling one’s way to adulthood. In the second issue of this wonderful new series, Superboy is forced to team up with Poison Ivy to solve the mysterious problem of overgrown plant life devouring Smallville. What makes this issue work is writer Jeff Lemire’s focus on Connor Kent’s relationship with his best friend, Simon, who has been begging Connor to allow him to be of help. When Simon rushes in to save the day by use of “Parasite frogs! Patent pending”, you know that these two boys are an excellent team. Lemire imbues this title with loads of humor, which is a change from his more serious-minded Sweet Tooth, and it’s interesting to watch Connor struggle with his new responsibilities and with wondering whether he should take his friend along for the ride, possibly endangering him. However, it’s clear that Simon’s intelligence is not to be underestimated, and I look forward to watching him and Superboy work together to fix an ailing Smallville.

Singer Sara Quin will defend graphic novel Essex County by Jeff Lemire. (CBC)

CBC's 2011 Canada Reads book panel will for the first time consider a graphic novel, after panellist Sara Quin chose Essex County by Jeff Lemire.

Quin, who is part of the music duo Tegan and Sara, is defending the graphic novel about the trials of a Canadian rural community.

Quin said she knows the graphic novel genre well and believes Essex County can be considered literature because of its "incredible characters and wonderful stories."

"The illustrations are so beautiful and so profound and tell a story all on their own," she said, speaking via video link at a press conference Wednesday.

Canada Reads announced its panellists and their choice of books for 2011 at the press conference.

The other panellists are:

Actor Lorne Cardinal, who will defend Unless by Carol Shields.
Former hockey pro Georges Laraque, who will defend The Bone Cage by Angie Abdou.
TV personality Debbie Travis, who will champion The Birth House by Ami McKay.
CNN journalist Ali Velshi, who will argue in favour of The Best Laid Plans by Terry Fallis.

Each of the 2011 panellists chose books from a list of 10 created after Canadians weighed in on the most significant Canadian books of the last 10 years.

FROM ESSEX COUNTY TO SMALLVILLE PART 2.

So here I am. Superboy #1 is out today! It feels like a long time coming. Pier Gallo and I have already been working on the book for the better part of 2010. So let me tell you a bit about what I have planned for Conner Kent and Smallville…

As of typing this I have six full scripts done with a seventh in the outline stage. And, I have the first fifteen issues plotted out. So, this will be a BIG story. A Big story made up of a lot of smaller stories. Most of the run will be only 1 or 2 part arcs that add up to a bigger, badder story I’m weaving in that will culminate around Issue 12 or 13. I don’t want to say too much about it yet, but the first issue has some pretty good clues and teases. It also has THE PHANTOM STRANGER! one of my favorite comic book characters. Seems like an odd fit? Well Smallville really is the ideal American small town. But all small towns have a dark side. And Smallville’s dark side will be slowly creeping to the surface, making Kon-el’s attempts at a “normal life” harder and harder to achieve. What you see in the first two issues will only be the tip of the iceberg. (If you’re interested I suggest picking up THE PHANTOM STRANGER showcase editions…they too will hold clues to coming events!)

Astute readers of my past work will also notice an “homage’ of sorts to Essex County in the first issues opening sequence. It pretty much mirrors the opening pages of Tales From The Farm, with the young character of Lester dreaming of flying away and leaving his troubles behind.

(PS…One more thing. Just a side note…my past work is obviously very Canadian. I’m a proud Canuck, what can I say. But it’s kind of interesting how Canadians have played a big part in Superboy’s life so far. Tom Grummet a fellow Canuck was the Superboy artist through the 90’s. maybe we’ll have to team up for an all Canadian issue?)

One thing I love to do in all my comics is use visual motifs. Re-occurring imagery that slowly reveals a metaphor or draws attention to certain aspects of the plot. I did it a lot in Essex and I do it a lot in Sweet Tooth. But It’s also fun to use these motifs as a way of drawing links, thematic or otherwise between some of my different books. It’s why I made Jepperd a hockey player in Sweet Tooth and had him being followed by crows as he trekked across the post-apocalyptic world. And it’s why I used this opening sequence to Superboy. Kon-el and Lester have a lot in common, and at the same time, they’re very different. Lester used his imagination to escape the small town he was stuck in and the hard realities f his life. He dreamed of being a superhero and flying away to great adventure. Conner is trying to use the normalcy of small town life to escape being a superhero. But he can’t. Like Lester he is who he is, and he’ll have to accept it sooner or later.

Now all this talk about my past work and hoe Essex County led to Superboy is probably a bit misleading. Any of my readers expecting to pick up Superboy and read “Essex County with Capes” will be disappointed. EC was a indie book through and through, both aesthetically and in its pacing and execution. Superboy is not Essex County. It can never be that kind of book. It’s a superhero comic. A DC superhero comic, and it celebrates it. It’s big and fun and full of action. But if I do my job right, all of that action a will mean something. And it will be balanced with real characters…real people living in small town America trying to figure themselves, and their lives out. And finding the answers within each other.

What else can I tell you about the book? Let’s see…There is a great first issue cover by Rafael Albequerque (American Vampire) and great covers to issues 2-5 by the awesome Phil Noto. There are a few new characters like Psionic Lad and The Spawn of Smallville. And of course there’s always KRYPTO! So that’s about it for now. That’s all I got. I hope you like the first issue. FROM ESSEX COUNTY TO SMALLVILLE PART 1.

This Wednesday, Nov.3, my first issue of DC Comic's new SUPERBOY series launches. In a way the release of Superboy marks a sort of milestone in my career, one I never saw coming. But, when I look back at how I got here, the path seems clear and natural.

It's been quite a journey for me both creatively and personally over the last 3 or 4 years. Four years ago...2006. I was still working full-time as a line cook at La Hacienda restaurant on Queen Street West in Toronto. I'd work night shifts and then get up early to draw all day before I had to go back in for my next shift.

I'd finished my first long-form comics work, the self-published LOST DOGS about a year and a half earlier and I'd been struggling with what to do next. There were a few aborted projects in there, but none of them really seemed to stick. I can't remember exactly how the idea for Tales From The Farm came about. But I do recall the original idea for that book was much more sci-fi heavy. It was a full-on genre book about a little kid living on a farm who dressed up as a superhero, and a big ex-hockey player. The two were the sole survivors in a small town after a plague wiped everyone else out (Sweet Tooth fans might find this concept eerily familiar).

But as I worked on that idea, I ended up dropping the overt genre elements and simplified it. It became a love letter to the small town where I grew up and to my own childhood on the farm. Tales From The Farm was meant as a stand-alone work. But it took off and the idea expanded into a series of books that would eventually be the Essex County Trilogy. It became a sweeping multi-generational epic about small town life and family, all filtered through the central metaphor of hockey.

The success of Essex County led to work at Vertigo, thanks to then editor Bob Schreck and the great Karen Berger. I did a book called The Nobody, another rumination on small town life, and then launched my current monthly book SWEET TOOTH, which oddly enough re-purposed some of my original ideas for Tales From The Farm and mashed them up with a bunch of other fun sci-fi and horror ideas I had floating around in my sketchbooks. I finally got to quit my kitchen job and work at comics full time. Life was good. But then it got better...

I never thought I'd ever write mainstream superhero comics. I just thought my style was a bit to personal and idiosyncratic to translate. And I never thought editors at DC or Marvel would be interested. I was wrong. Within a few months of Sweet Tooth's release I had offers to write superhero books for both Marvel and DC. It's no secret that I grew up reading superhero comics. Anyone who read Tales From The Farm can pretty clearly see young Lester's love of comics as a nod to my own childhood obsession. I loved them as a kid and still do now. So the opportunity to take on a superhero book of my own was really exciting, if not a bit unexpected.

DC offered me a chance to write an ATOM story in Adventure comics. I took it, and it was going pretty well. I admit, in hindsight that there was a pretty steep learning curve going from writing and drawing everything myself to trying to filter my "voice" through another artist. But Mahmud Asrar, the Atom art-phenom made the transition in those early chapters go a lot smoother, and eventually I started to get the hang of it.

Then came the chance to write Superboy. At first I wasn't really interested. I actually didn't think the character or the book would be a good fit for me. Sometimes the most obvious things are the hardest to see. But then I took a step back and saw how perfect I was for the book after all. I saw how all of the themes that I loved exploring in Essex County and The Nobody could also be present in Superboy...small town life, community , family...it was all there. Only this time instead of filtering it through the metaphor of hockey, I could filter it through the metaphor of the super hero.

And that's how I began working on Superboy. Where it would lead me was even more unexpected, but I'll pick that up tomorrow. I'll also explain a few homages to Essex County "hidden" within the first couple of issues, and tease some upcoming storylines. See you then!

Out today in comic shops everywhere is THE ATOM Special #1, the first part of an 11-chapter story written by myself and drawn by the extraordinary Mahmud Asrar. This Wednesday DC Comics will release the 700th Issue of Superman! Iam lucky enough to have a small part in that historic issue. It will feature a sneak peek of my plans for SUPERBOY as well as some exclusive artwork.
